We caught up with Cherryducker Phil Medway (Head of Live), just before he began work on organising the live stream for the Lush Summit 2018 — Feb 14th & 15th 2018, to get his thoughts on this groundbreaking event and how Lush Cosmetics are using the power of live streaming to share their many important messages.
What is the Lush Summit?
Held at Old Billingsgate, London, Lush Summit 2018 is ‘a hotbed of discussion, debate, activism and action, from campaigners and grassroots voices across the globe, discussing topics spanning human rights, animal rights, and the environment.— live on Lush Player’
Lush promote the Summit as; ‘a digital event, which means you can join thousands of other like-minded changemakers across the globe as you tune in to Lush Player to learn more about the charities and organisations making a difference in 2018.’
Why live stream an event like this?
Live streaming can extend the reach of an event to a global audience and allow you to interact with them in realtime. For a brand like Lush the fact that they can engage with people from all over the world without the carbon footprint travel is a big plus.
After the event it also provides Lush with a library of content which they can publish to their audience to view on-demand.
How do you go about live streaming an event like this?
The Summit is a hive of activity across several stages, performance spaces and installations. To capture the event in all it’s glory requires a lot of crews and tech. Over 70 Cherryduckers are needed across the 2 days.
We basically setup up a TV channel for Lush across two days, using presenters to link between different ‘programmes’, to create a conversation with the viewers and a continuos feed of content.
Can you tell us about the innovative things Lush is doing as a brand?
For the last Showcase we created a continuous 360 stream which allowed people to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the event. This allowed a view in to what was going on without any language barriers for their global audience.
What do these events teach you about the future of live streaming?
As people have easier access to view live streams brands can really benefit from using it as a medium to engage instantly with their audiences. The quality is constantly improving, as the line between TV and online blurs more and more. With innovations such as 360 live streaming it really is the platform for brands to be innovative and creative.
Thanks Phil! Good luck with the 2018 Lush Summit!
